Sexual activity in women over 60

Woman's Body
By Michael Bates, M.D.

I just reviewed an excellent article (http://consumer.healthday.com/senior-citizen-information-31/senior-citizen-news-778/many-older-women-still-have-active-sex-lives-study-finds-701495.html).  The following are the highlights.

  • Women maintain sexual satisfaction as they get older.
  • 6 in 10 women over the age of 60 in committed relationships are sexually active.
  • Women in their 60s and 70s have sexual satisfaction levels similar to women in their 30s and 40s.
  • For women, being connected to one person is more important than having sex for the sake of sex.
  • Age isn't related to sexual satisfaction, instead sexual satisfaction is related to their relationship, better communication and prioritizing the importance of sex.

As a practicing physician, did I ask my over 50 patients if they had any sexual concerns or questions?  I regret to say, not regularly, only if they asked me about a problem.  Physicians need to recognize that sexual activity is a normal part of aging patients lives and to offer this opening to their patients during their annual exams.  If your physician doesn't, don't hesitate to open the topic with him or her.
