Female 'Viagra', Addyi, approved with strong warning from the FDA

Flibanserin trade name Addyi
By Michael Bates, M.D.

This is big news, but is this really like Viagra, and is it safe? No, it is not like Viagra, which works well by increasing blood flow to the penis. The mechanism of action for Addyi, which is a member of a family of neurotransmitter drugs (i.e. Prozac) used for treating depression, is to activate sexual impulses in the brain.

Is it as effective as Viagra, which works for the majority of men who use it? No, it is minimally effective in the appropriate female patient.

Is it taken prior to sexual activity? No, it must be taken daily and it takes several days of treatment before a positive response is noted.

Is it safe? It has serious side effects, especially related to alcohol intake.

Be careful with this medication! And ask your doctor many questions before taking this drug into consideration.

Feel free to send me your questions and comments, too!
