The Desire to Be Desired

We are all old enough to remember Rod Stewart’s 1978 song “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?” It starts “If you want my body and you think I’m sexy…”

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, let’s think about love—that mysterious force in people’s lives. 20th-century German philosopher Frederick Hegel defined love as “the desire of the desire of the other.” We all want to be desired, to feel worthy of love, to feel worthy of someone’s attention.

Take time this Valentine’s Day to desire your partner. Tell him/her how much you love and adore him/her. Emphasize that you will always love and care for her/him. Embrace and whisper, make one another feel safe and warm. Flowers, dinners, and cards are fine, but the greatest gift you can give your loved one is undivided attention and intimacy. Show them that they are desired.

Don’t let stiffness, weakness, illness, vaginal dryness, or performance anxiety interfere!
